Do You Know What Time It Is?

One of the strongest images I have from my brief intense trip to Jerusalem is of Rabbi Eli, probably the closest thing to an Old Testament prophet I have ever met. This was a guy who had been arrested several times for standing in solidarity with Palestinians, protesting the human rights violations and protecting their land against the Zionists and fanatics.

Saint Cecelia: Beauty Holds Court Within

In the Office of Readings for the Roman liturgy, the church offers a beautiful discourse on the psalms by Saint Augustine for the feast of Saint Cecelia. In it Augustine is explaining the meaning of the phrase, Sing to God with songs of joy. “How is this to be done?” he asks.

In the Center and Outside the Walls

On November 18th we celebrate the anniversary of the dedication of two different basilicas, Saint Peter’s Basilica at the Vatican and the Basilica of Saint Paul on the Ositian way in Rome. It’s notable that liturgically Saint Peter never actually gets a feast all to himself. There is the feast of Saint Peter and Paul; then there is the Chair of Peter, which celebrates the primacy of the Petrine office. Even today when we celebrate his titular church it doesn’t stand alone; he has to share it with Saint Paul. There’s something right about that, though, for this reason: the Basilica of Saint Paul is usually referred to as Saint Paul Outside-the-Walls, because it was outside of the old city of Rome.
